Three Strangers Found His Lost Wedding Ring and Flew to Ireland Dressed as Hobbits to Return It
Patrick Mohr was enjoying a family holiday in Italy when his wedding ring slipped off his finger and disappeared into a rushing mountain river. He searched the water, but the current had already swept it away.
He’d worn that gold band for 16 years, and losing it was heartbreaking.
A Ring Lost in the River
Patrick was vacationing near Bagni di Lucca in Tuscany with his wife, Joanne McHugh, and their three daughters. The family had stopped at a mountain stream where the children were jumping from a large rock into the water.
Patrick was standing in the river catching his daughters as they jumped. During one of those moments, a child grabbed his hand, and his wedding ring slipped off his finger.
The current carried it away almost immediately.
Patrick searched the water, hoping to spot the gold band among the stones. But the river was moving quickly, and the ring could have ended up almost anywhere. His wife noticed three young Italian men nearby and asked whether they could help.
Their names were Nicola Malloggi, Edoardo Poggi, and Filippo Palagi. They didn’t have swimming goggles, but they listened to the family’s story and agreed to look. Before the family left, they exchanged phone numbers. Patrick hoped someone might find the ring, although he had no idea how determined his three new acquaintances were about to become.
Three Friends and a Very Unusual Quest
The Italians began joking that recovering the ring would be like a quest from The Lord of the Rings. They imagined themselves as adventurers searching for a precious golden treasure hidden beneath the water. What began as a joke soon turned into a mission.
They returned to the river and searched from a kayak, carefully studying the water and trying to spot anything shining beneath the surface. Two days passed without success. The friends decided to search a more difficult section of the river. They brought diving masks and ropes, securing themselves to large boulders so they could investigate the powerful rapids.
The current rushed around them as they examined the rocky riverbed. Finding a small gold band in those conditions took patience, determination, and a little luck.
Then Nicola spotted something shining beneath the water.
He reached down and pulled up a gold ring. After all their searching, they’d found Patrick’s wedding band. The three friends had completed their quest, but they still had one more surprise in mind.
A Message From Middle-earth
Nine days after losing his ring, Patrick was preparing pasta when a message arrived from an unfamiliar Italian number. It contained a photograph of his wedding band, accompanied by a greeting addressed to Sméagol. Patrick stood in his kitchen staring at the picture. He’d spent days believing the ring was gone, and now three strangers had somehow managed to recover it from the river.
He was so surprised that he could barely concentrate on cooking. When Joanne noticed his expression and asked what had happened, he showed her the photograph. The whole family was thrilled. The Italians had spent days searching for something that belonged to a man they’d met only briefly. They’d found it, and now they wanted to return it.
But mailing the ring back to Ireland would have been far too ordinary for the adventure they had in mind.
Three Hobbits Arrive in Ireland
The friends decided to make the delivery themselves. They would travel more than 1,000 miles from Tuscany to Ireland and personally return the ring to Patrick. And they weren’t coming dressed as ordinary tourists.
When Nicola, Edoardo, and Filippo arrived, they were dressed as hobbits from The Lord of the Rings. They’d taken on the roles of Frodo, Merry, and Sam, turning the return of a wedding ring into a scene straight out of Middle-earth.
Music from the films played as they presented their precious cargo to its owner. Patrick couldn’t have imagined a better ending to the story. His wedding ring was back on his finger, and the three strangers he’d met beside an Italian river were standing in front of him dressed as hobbits.
The reunion was funny, emotional, and unlike anything the family had experienced before. Rather than simply handing over the ring and leaving, the visitors stayed to explore Ireland with their new friend.
An Irish Welcome for Three Italian Heroes
Patrick wanted to make the trip memorable for the men who had gone to so much trouble to help him. He took them to Glendalough, where they explored the ancient monastery, lakes, and beautiful Wicklow Mountains. They also visited Glenmalure Valley and stopped at a local pub for Guinness.
Later, Patrick welcomed them into his family home for a traditional Irish dinner. The Italians brought gifts from Tuscany, including sweet wine and biscuits. Patrick gave each man a personalized silver bracelet to remember the adventure.
By the end of the visit, they were no longer three strangers who happened to find a lost ring. They were friends who had shared an adventure none of them would ever forget. The men even began talking about seeing one another again, either in Ireland or back in Italy.
A Friendship Forged by a Golden Ring
Patrick’s holiday could have ended with the frustrating memory of losing something precious. The ring that disappeared into a Tuscan river had gone on quite a journey before finding its way home. But Patrick gained something he never expected when he lost it.
Three new friends for life.
