The Golden Retriever Who Kept a Paralyzed Man Alive

The Golden Retriever Who Kept a Paralyzed Man Alive in the Snow for 20 Hours

Bob only wanted one piece of firewood. It was New Year’s Eve 2016, and he was watching football at his home in northern Michigan when he decided to step outside during a commercial break.

It was around 10:30 p.m. He was wearing a shirt, long johns and slippers because he expected to be back inside in seconds. But just fifteen feet from his front door, he slipped on the frozen ground, broke his neck and found himself unable to move.

His house was right there, but he couldn’t stand, crawl or pull himself toward it. He began shouting for help, hoping someone would hear him.

The Only One Who Heard Him

Bob’s nearest neighbor lived about a quarter-mile away. It was freezing outside, and there was little chance anyone would happen to walk past his house that late at night. He kept calling out, but nobody came.

Then Kelsey, his Golden Retriever, appeared beside him. She began barking and licking his face and hands, staying close while he lay helpless in the snow. As the temperature dropped into the mid-20s Fahrenheit, she pressed her body against him to help keep him warm.

Bob continued shouting until his voice began giving out. Kelsey kept barking, moving around him and returning to his side. Whenever he struggled to stay alert, she was there licking his face and trying to get a response.

Kelsey Stayed Through the Night

The hours passed, and Bob was still lying in the snow. His neck injury made it impossible for him to get himself to safety, and he had gone outside without a coat or proper winter clothing. His body was getting dangerously cold.

Kelsey stayed with him as the night dragged on. She lay against him for warmth, licked his face and continued barking into the darkness. When morning arrived, she was still there.

Bob was becoming weaker, and eventually he could no longer call out effectively. His daughter later shared that one of his final memories before losing consciousness was apologizing to Kelsey. He believed he wasn’t going to survive.

But Kelsey continued trying to get someone’s attention. She had already spent the entire night outside with him, and she showed no sign of leaving.

After Nearly 20 Hours, Someone Finally Heard Her

As New Year’s Day wore on, Kelsey’s barking reportedly changed into an unusual, almost screeching howl. She had been making noise for hours, but this sound was different enough to finally attract attention.

Around 6:30 p.m., a neighbor heard her and came to investigate. Bob had been lying outside for almost twenty hours, and Kelsey had stayed beside him the entire time.

Emergency crews rushed Bob to McLaren Northern Michigan hospital. By the time doctors examined him, his core body temperature had fallen below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. He had severe hypothermia, an abnormal heart rhythm and serious injuries to his neck and spine.

Doctors Were Amazed by What They Found

Bob was in critical condition, but there was something remarkable about his injuries. Despite spending nearly twenty hours outside in freezing temperatures, he had no significant frostbite.

Bob immediately credited Kelsey for keeping him warm. Neurosurgeon Dr. Chaim Colen also recognized the role the dog had played in helping him survive the night.

Bob still faced another serious problem. His spinal injury had left him unable to move, and doctors needed to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord. Dr. Colen performed emergency surgery to give him the best possible chance of recovering.

The operation was successful. Bob began regaining movement and was eventually able to start rehabilitation, something that had seemed almost impossible while he was lying in the snow.

His Two Heroes

During his recovery, Bob spoke about the two heroes who had helped save his life. One was Dr. Colen, who operated on his injured spine. The other was Kelsey, who had stayed with him through the cold when he could do nothing to help himself.

Kelsey hadn’t run away to find help or tried to lead someone back to the house. She had remained right beside Bob, giving him warmth and barking until someone finally heard her.

As Bob prepared for intensive rehabilitation, he and Kelsey were reunited. The last time they had been together, he was lying helpless in the snow, unable to move.

Thanks to her, he was now recovering.
