He Spent 40 Years Building a Boat. At 86, Strangers Are Helping Him Finish It
In the front yard of a house in Mineral Wells, Texas, sits an enormous steel boat that has been under construction since 1987. Its builder, an 86-year-old man named Dale, has spent nearly four decades working toward one dream: sailing his own boat to Alaska.
The vessel stretches 62 feet and has four staterooms. Dale built it by hand, welding together a ship that would one day carry him far beyond the Texas countryside. But as the years passed, finishing the boat became harder. At 86, Dale could no longer manage all the remaining work himself.
A Boat in the Middle of Texas
Dale started building his boat in 1987, with plans to sail it all the way to Alaska. It was an ambitious dream for someone living hundreds of miles from the ocean, but he’d already decided he was going to build the vessel himself.
Year after year, he worked on the enormous steel structure in his front yard. The boat gradually took shape, complete with four staterooms and everything needed for the journey he imagined. By 2026, the project was about 75 percent complete.
But age was catching up with Dale, and some of the remaining work had become too difficult for him to handle alone. There was another problem. His property sat on a steep hill, and getting a 62-foot steel boat down to the road was going to take specialized equipment and a lot of planning.
Dale had spent most of his adult life dreaming about sailing to Alaska, and he was determined to see his ship reach the water.
Three Strangers Knock on His Door
Everything began to change when a man named Kiah spotted the enormous boat while working in Mineral Wells. He filmed what he’d discovered and sent the video to his friend Laurence Benson, an English content creator who was working in Texas.
Laurence couldn’t believe what he was looking at. Someone had been building an enormous ship in the middle of a Texas neighbourhood, and he wanted to meet the man behind it. He and two friends, Benjie and Will, tried calling Dale but couldn’t get through. So they drove about an hour and a half from Fort Worth and knocked on his door.
Benjie spoke with Dale’s wife, who told them her husband was still getting ready. When Dale came outside and began talking about his boat, the visitors could see how excited he was. He’d been working on it for almost 40 years, and he still spoke about the journey as though he were getting ready to leave.
The three men were fascinated by his story, and they wanted to see more.
The Dream That Never Went Away
Dale invited the visitors to look around his boat, and before long, he was climbing a ladder to show them the deck. He hadn’t been up there in years, but he wanted his new friends to see what he’d created.
The boat was enormous, and the amount of work he’d put into it was incredible. Every section represented years of effort, from the steel hull to the living quarters he’d built for his future voyage.
Laurence was moved by Dale’s determination.
Here was a man who had spent almost four decades building something most people wouldn’t even attempt. He’d never lost interest in his dream, even when the work became harder and the years kept passing.
The three visitors began talking about what it would take to help him finish. They knew the project was bigger than anything they could manage themselves, but they also knew there were people who would love to be part of something like this.
And that’s when the idea began to grow.
The Internet Becomes His Crew
Laurence, Benjie, and Will decided to share Dale’s story and ask people to help bring his dream to life. They started an online fundraiser to cover the remaining construction, transportation, and equipment needed to move the boat toward its first voyage.
People immediately connected with Dale’s story. Donations began arriving from strangers who had never met him. Some contributed money, while others shared the fundraiser and encouraged their friends to get involved. Within days, more than 1,500 people had donated over $41,000.
Laurence began working with Dale’s family to plan the next steps. They needed to find people who could help finish the boat, arrange the heavy machinery to move it, and work out how to transport such a large vessel.
For the first time in years, Dale wasn’t facing the project alone. Thousands of people were now following his progress, hoping to see the boat leave that front yard and finally reach the water.
One Enormous Boat and a Community Behind It
Getting a 62-foot steel boat down a steep hill is quite an undertaking. The team needs specialized machinery and experienced operators to move it safely before arranging transport to a launch site. There’s also the remaining construction work, which requires skilled hands and the right materials. But Dale now has something he didn’t have before: a growing community of people who want to help him finish.
Laurence and his friends have brought fresh attention to the project, and the fundraiser has given the family new resources to work with. People who had never heard of Mineral Wells are now following the story of an elderly boatbuilder in Texas, cheering him on as he works toward a dream that began in 1987.
The project has become something much bigger than a boat in someone’s front yard. It’s now an adventure shared by thousands of people who want to see Dale succeed. There’s still work to be done before Dale’s boat reaches the water, but the journey has taken a wonderful turn.
After almost 40 years of building it himself, Dale finally has a crew.
