The Rescue Dog Who Took Three Rattlesnake Bites for a 7-Year-Old Girl

When seven-year-old Molly DeLuca went outside to play with her dog, nobody expected anything unusual to happen. The family’s backyard in Tampa, Florida, was fenced, and their German shepherd, Haus, was right beside her.

But Molly’s grandmother soon noticed something strange. Haus kept lunging forward, then pulling back. He was moving in a way she had never seen before, repeatedly placing himself between Molly and something hidden in the grass. Then the family spotted it.

An eastern diamondback rattlesnake was in the yard, dangerously close to Molly. Haus had been confronting the snake while keeping himself between it and the little girl.

By the time the family realized what was happening, the two-year-old German shepherd had been bitten three times. Molly hadn’t been bitten once.

A Rescue Dog With a New Family

The DeLuca family had adopted Haus from Heidi’s Legacy Dog Rescue just two months earlier. Despite being relatively new to the household, he had already become inseparable from Molly and her younger brother.

Haus loved spending time with the children. He followed them around the house, played with them outside, and kept a watchful eye on whatever they were doing. On May 11, 2016, that protective nature became something extraordinary.

Molly had been enjoying time in the backyard when Haus encountered the rattlesnake. Her grandmother watched him move toward the snake, recoil, and then move forward again.

He could have retreated farther into the yard, but instead he held his position between Molly and the danger. Eastern diamondback rattlesnakes are among North America’s largest venomous snakes. Their bites can deliver a powerful dose of venom, and multiple bites can be especially dangerous.

The DeLucas lived near a state park, where wildlife was common. Although their backyard was enclosed, snakes could still slip beneath the fence from the surrounding land. The family rushed Haus to BluePearl Veterinary Partners in Tampa, hoping the veterinarians could save him.

Three Bites and a Fight for His Life

By the time Haus arrived at the emergency veterinary hospital, he was in serious trouble. The venom had caused significant swelling and was affecting his kidneys. Because he had been bitten multiple times, the amount of venom in his body required unusually aggressive treatment.

Veterinarians began administering antivenom, carefully monitoring his bloodwork and organ function. Instead of receiving only one or two doses, Haus needed a continuous supply to counter the effects of the venom. He also required strong pain medication and round-the-clock care.

For the DeLuca family, it was a frightening situation. They had adopted Haus only weeks earlier, and now the dog who had protected their daughter was fighting to survive.

His injuries were severe enough that nobody could promise an easy recovery. The veterinary team watched his kidney function closely while treating the swelling and damage caused by the bites. Slowly, signs of improvement began to appear.

Haus started eating again. He became more alert, and eventually he was able to walk.

Veterinarian Jennifer Holm later described his recovery as remarkable. After several difficult days, the team began preparing for the possibility that he could return home. Meanwhile, news of what Haus had done was spreading across the country.

Thousands of Strangers Wanted to Help

The DeLucas faced an enormous veterinary bill. The multiple doses of antivenom, emergency treatment, medication, and constant monitoring had made Haus’s care extremely expensive. A fundraising campaign was created to help pay for his treatment.

Once people heard about the rescue dog who had taken three rattlesnake bites while protecting a little girl, donations began pouring in. The campaign passed its original goal so quickly that the organizers eventually told supporters they believed enough had been raised to cover Haus’s medical expenses.

The total climbed past $50,000, with FOX 13 in Tampa reporting that donations eventually exceeded $52,000. The family was overwhelmed by the response.

They also made a decision about the money that remained after paying Haus’s veterinary bills. Rather than keeping the extra funds, the DeLucas planned to donate them to organizations helping animals in need.

Among the beneficiaries were Heidi’s Legacy Dog Rescue, where they had adopted Haus, and Frankie’s Friends, an organization that helps families facing expensive emergency veterinary treatment.

The Hero Comes Home

After approximately a week in emergency care, Haus was finally ready to leave the hospital. The veterinary staff had decorated and signed his protective collar, giving him a send-off worthy of the attention he had received.

Supporters and reporters gathered outside the clinic to watch him reunite with his family. The German shepherd who had arrived in critical condition was now walking out of the hospital. He still needed follow-up care, but veterinarians were optimistic about his recovery.

Haus soon began receiving recognition for what he had done. PETA announced a Heroic Dog Award, and the American Kennel Club Humane Fund later selected him for its Award for Canine Excellence in the Exemplary Companion Dog category. For Molly and her family, however, the most important reward was simply having him back home.

Donya DeLuca, Molly’s mother, said she believed Haus had saved her daughter’s life. The family had witnessed him repeatedly confront the rattlesnake, taking the bites himself while Molly remained unharmed. And it was especially remarkable considering how recently Haus had joined their family.

Just two months earlier, he had been a rescue dog waiting for someone to adopt him. Now he was being celebrated across the country for protecting one of the children who had welcomed him into their home.

Helping the Dogs Still Waiting

Haus’s story eventually came full circle. With the fundraising campaign bringing in more than enough to help pay his medical expenses, Heidi’s Legacy became one of the organizations chosen to receive support from the remaining donations.

Mars Petcare also stepped forward, announcing that it would provide a year’s supply of dog food to Heidi’s Legacy in Haus’s honor.

The organization that had found Haus a loving family was now receiving help because of his extraordinary actions.
