A Man Fell Into a Glacier. His Chihuahua Was the Only Thing Rescuers Could See

Jan Gilar stepped onto a patch of snow high in the Swiss Alps, and the ground suddenly disappeared beneath his feet. He fell through the ice into a deep crevasse. His shoulder was injured, freezing water was dripping around him, and he couldn’t climb back to the surface.

Somewhere above him, his little Chihuahua, Filip, was whimpering. Jan had a walkie-talkie and managed to call for help. But when a rescue helicopter arrived, the crew faced a problem. They knew someone was trapped somewhere on the glacier, but they couldn’t find the opening he’d fallen through.

For nearly 40 minutes, they searched. Then someone spotted a tiny movement on a rock.

A Hike That Went Terribly Wrong

It was July 4, 2025. Jan had moved to Switzerland from the Czech Republic less than a month earlier and was exploring the mountains near Saas-Fee with his dog.

Filip was a two-year-old Chihuahua with some Papillon features, a fluffy coat, and enormous ears. He loved hiking with Jan and could comfortably walk long distances. When he became tired, Jan carried him in a special backpack.

The two had climbed mountains together in the Czech Republic, and Jan was excited to explore the Swiss Alps. That afternoon, they reached the Fee Glacier. Jan stopped for lunch on a rock, enjoyed the view, and decided to explore a little farther. He took a few steps across the snow.

Without realizing it, he’d stepped onto a snow bridge, a layer of snow covering an opening in the glacier. It collapsed beneath his weight.

Jan plunged into the crevasse. He initially tried climbing out, but his shoulder was badly injured. Below him, he could see an even deeper opening in the ice.

He was wearing shorts and a thin shirt because the weather had been beautiful. Down in the crevasse, however, the temperature was around freezing, and water was dripping from the ice.

Before long, his clothes were soaked. Jan realized he needed help quickly.

A Voice on the Radio

Fortunately, Jan had brought an amateur walkie-talkie. He switched it on and began calling for help, hoping somebody nearby was listening on the same frequency. A couple named Claudia and Ralf heard him. They contacted emergency services and continued talking to Jan, helping him remain calm while they waited for rescuers.

There was one major complication. Although Claudia and Ralf knew Jan was trapped on the glacier, they couldn’t tell the rescue crew exactly where he was.

The Fee Glacier covers an enormous area of ice, snow, and scattered rocks. From the air, the small opening was almost impossible to identify.

Shortly after 3 p.m., an Air Zermatt helicopter headed toward the glacier carrying a rescue team. The crew began searching the mountainside, looking for anything that might reveal the missing man’s location.

They flew over the ice again and again. Meanwhile, Filip was still waiting for his owner.

The Smallest Rescue Guide

After Jan fell, Filip had remained near the opening. He eventually settled on a rock beside the crevasse and watched the area where his owner had disappeared. Jan could hear his dog above him.

The little Chihuahua stayed there while the helicopter searched the surrounding glacier. Then one of the rescue specialists noticed something moving on a rock.

It was Filip. The pilot brought the helicopter closer, and the crew spotted the tiny dog sitting beside a narrow opening in the snow. They had found Jan.

The crew had spent approximately 40 minutes searching a vast glacier. The clue that finally led them to the stranded hiker was a Chihuahua sitting on a rock.

Air Zermatt later credited Filip with helping save his owner’s life. The company’s spokesman, Bruno Kalbermatten, told reporters that without the dog, the outcome could have been very different. The opening was so difficult to see that the rescue team might never have found Jan in time.

Getting Jan Back to the Surface

Finding the crevasse was only the beginning. The rescuers still had to reach Jan and bring him safely out of the ice.

They landed nearby and began setting up equipment. The helicopter’s powerful downdraft briefly knocked little Filip off his feet, but he stayed near the rescue operation.

The team built a secure anchoring system beside the opening, using ropes, pulleys, and a harness. Rescue specialists then descended into the crevasse to reach Jan. They secured him and carefully brought him back to the surface.

Filip watched the operation from nearby. And when Jan finally emerged from the ice, the little dog’s tail began wagging.

After the rescue, the helicopter carried both Jan and Filip to a hospital in Visp, where Jan received treatment for his injuries. The operation had involved a radio call answered by strangers, a helicopter crew, specialist rescue equipment, and a tiny dog who refused to abandon his owner.

The People Who Helped Bring Him Home

In January 2026, Jan spoke to BBC News Mundo about the accident and the dog who had helped save him. He explained that Filip had been a gift from his parents, who bred dogs in the Czech Republic. The little Chihuahua had become his regular hiking companion.

Jan was particularly grateful that Filip hadn’t been riding in his backpack or attached to a leash when the snow bridge collapsed. On that particular afternoon, his dog had been walking freely beside him. He also remembered hearing Filip crying after the fall and then realizing the dog had settled down to wait for him.

After leaving the hospital, Jan contacted Claudia and Ralf to thank them for answering his radio call. He was also grateful to the helicopter crew and the hospital staff who had cared for him.

The accident had taught him how dangerous a glacier could be, even for someone with plenty of hiking experience. But it also gave him a story about his little companion that he’d never forget.

When the rescuers finally found Jan, Filip had been waiting beside the opening for the entire ordeal.

And the moment his owner was brought back into the daylight, his tail started wagging.
